Some 50 disc golfers from Illinois, Minnesota and Wisconsin converged on Whitecap Mountains for the first annual Whitecap Disc Golf Octoberfest Retreat this past weekend. Disc golf is the fastest growing sport in the U.S. This summer, Whitecap Mountains installed a permanent 9 hole course within their Bunny Bowl beneath the main lodge designed by Dick Langton of Hayward. For this tournament, an additional 9 holes were added up and down Whitecap Mountain, the western-most of the three Penokee Mountains that make up the resort.

Disc golf is played similarly to "ball" golf. Players use discs - professional Frisbees - of various designs. Some are weighted for long throws, medium throws and "putter" discs for those short shots at the basket or "hole". The object is to complete the course with the fewest possible throws.

For the tournament that ran Saturday and Sunday at Whitecap, players completed three rounds on a par 54, 18 hole course for a total of 72 holes and a par 162. Two rounds were played each day and one was a night round played Saturday after dark.

At 12 under par, Chicago native Pat Blake (27) was the tourney champion. Blake spent the summer serving as the disc golf pro at Highbridge Hills outside of Ashland, the nation's largest disc golf complex. Students from UW Stout in Menomonie had a strong showing, with Nick Ham (20) coming in at second with 10 under par; and Jessie Doxtator (20) and Kirk Olson (19) in a tie for third at 5 under par. On a tie-breaker toss, Olson topped Doxtator to earn third place.

The night course record was 7 under par by both Blake and Ham
